What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy and hypnotic suggestion, is a trance-like state in which you have heightened focus, concentration and become absorbed inwardly. When you are under hypnosis, you usually feel calm and relaxed, and you can concentrate intensely on a specific thought, memory, feeling or sensation while blocking out distractions.
When under hypnosis, you are more open than usual to suggestions. This can allow your perceptions, behaviour, sensations and emotions to be modified. Therapeutic hypnosis is used to improve your health and well-being and is different from so-called state hypnosis used by entertainers. Although you are more open to suggestion during therapeutic hypnosis, your free will remains the same and you do not lose control over your behaviour. This means that new beliefs and values incongruent with your own can not make you do something out of character, like quack like a duck!
Hypnosis is an education and communication process by which the conscious mind and the unconscious mind agree. This is done by bypassing the critical faculty of the mind and establishing selective thinking. What the mind agrees to, the body will respond to, meaning whatever you can hold in your mind and feel as real, then it can become real.
In hypnotherapy my client is guided into a form of relaxation, where their body and mind relax; they can hear everything, know where they are at all times, are able to move and adjust at anytime, and if they need to, they can open their eyes. All hypnosis is self hypnosis, a hypnotherapist merely acts as a coach guiding the client into a state of relaxation. When my client is relaxed and lets go of judgement, I am able to, through the use of specific language, assist the client in being more flexible to change. It is the ultimate means of heightening motivation by directing the unconscious mind to work in co-operation with the conscious desires of the client. (AHA)
